On July 20, 1969, humanity took its first step on the moon - and an #EagleScout led the way. Neil Armstrong’s famous words, “The Eagle has landed,” resonated around the world - and they continue to hold a special place for the #ScoutingAmerica community. ?? Armstrong's journey - from Scouting to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration - demonstrates the power of youth development rooted in leadership, exploration, positive values and service. In fact, to help prepare for the historic mission, Armstrong trained at our very own Philmont Scout Ranch. As we celebrate the anniversary of the moon landing, we reflect on how so much has changed since 1969 - but that the Scout Oath and Scout Law have not. Scouting helped launch a lunar legend last century. Today, it continues to help cultivate qualities like resilience, curiosity and character in young people. ?? We look forward to seeing more incredible Scouts do more incredible things - leaving their legacy in STEM, the arts, professional sports and so many other industries.
On Sunday July 20 1969 I recall looking at the moon, hoping to see the lunar module Eagle, from my walled tent at BSA Worth Ranch, on my first of five summer camps, working on my merit badges required to earn the Eagle Scout Award. Thank you Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 crew for another giant step forward for all Eagle Scouts.
That is so cool!
I, along with thousands of other Scouts, watched the moon landing on a big outdoor screen from the 1969 Jamboree in Coeur d’ Alene, ID. You couldn’t help looking from the screen to the moon.
And in Neil Armstrong‘s space suit pocket was the World Scout badge - it travelled all the way to the moon, according to my father, Len Jarrett (the World Scout Bureau’s Director of Administration at the time). It was framed and hung on the wall in the Bureau’s Geneva office. Hopefully, it has made its way to the World Scout Bureau’s Kuala Lumpur office and is proudly displayed there. ????
Congrats! ??
