With #PinewoodDerby cars, robot fun (thanks to Explorer Post 1010 of Rockville, Maryland!), #ScoutingAmerica spirit and plenty of smiles, Camp Capitol Hill kicked off earlier today at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C. As we share the latest #Scouting updates with representatives, we thank the six local units - from Cub Scouts, to Explorers and more - that have gathered to help bring this event to life. On July 20, 1969, humanity took its first step on the moon - and an #EagleScout led the way. Neil Armstrong’s famous words, “The Eagle has landed,” resonated around the world - and they continue to hold a special place for the #ScoutingAmerica community. ?? Armstrong's journey - from Scouting to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration - demonstrates the power of youth development rooted in leadership, exploration, positive values and service. In fact, to help prepare for the historic mission, Armstrong trained at our very own Philmont Scout Ranch. As we celebrate the anniversary of the moon landing, we reflect on how so much has changed since 1969 - but that the Scout Oath and Scout Law have not. Scouting helped launch a lunar legend last century. Today, it continues to help cultivate qualities like resilience, curiosity and character in young people. ?? We look forward to seeing more incredible Scouts do more incredible things - leaving their legacy in STEM, the arts, professional sports and so many other industries.

110 years ago, a camp director and assistant camp director had a vision to recognize youth who led with quiet strength and selfless service. That vision became Order of the Arrow, Scouting America (OA). Since 1915, the #OA has: 1) identified #Scouts who live by example 2) encouraged others to serve and 3) built a legacy that spans generations – among so many other things, too. Today, the OA remains a cornerstone of Scouting America’s leadership development and outdoor programming – lending a hand across the nation and helping young people grow into trailblazers who make a real difference. I don’t coach soccer or sports. That’s always been Elaine’s gig. Instead, I’ve spent the last eight years as a volunteer adult leader with Scouting America — and I’m incredibly proud of it. Over the last year alone, I camped 24 nights. (Yes, there are less intense ways to get involved — promise!) Weekly meetings, fundraisers, and a lot of camping gear and sunscreen come with the territory. But so does this: Just last week, I joined my oldest son on a 50-mile whitewater rafting trek down the New River in West Virginia. We paddled solo inflatable kayaks through Class 1-3 rapids for four days, then teamed up in a big raft to take on Class 2-5 rapids. We jumped off 15-foot boulders, stood under waterfalls, and camped each night under a canopy of stars and fireflies. But the best parts? Watching young people lead. Honoring their achievements. Seeing them conquer fears. Encouraging a first rappel. Coaching a panicked scout through a self-rescue on the water. Seeing kids help each other — and us adults — flip boats and face fears. Scouting builds leaders. Leaders who ask, “What SHOULD we do?” Not just “What do we want to do?” We teach project management, courage, advocacy, and how to stay calm in the face of chaos. How to live fearlessly … or at least tackle challenges with less fear, having overcome adversity time and time again. We teach kids to Be Prepared — not just for the outdoors, but for life. Eagles on the Hill, an event honoring the leadership and service of Eagle Scouts across the nation. For over a century, Scouting has shaped responsible, civically engaged leaders. This event is an opportunity to showcase that legacy and inspire the next generation of public servants. ??? We’ll highlight the achievements of Eagle Scouts, their ongoing impact in communities, and the strong bipartisan support for Scouting on Capitol Hill. ??
